What Is a Vedic Birth Chart?
A Vedic birth chart — also called a Kundli, Janam Kundali, or Vedic natal chart — is a map of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. It shows where each of the nine Jyotish planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu) was positioned in the zodiac at that moment, divided across twelve houses that govern different areas of life.
Unlike Western astrology, Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac — the actual positions of planets against the fixed star background — rather than the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. This means your Vedic Sun sign, Moon sign, and Rising sign (Lagna) may differ from what you have seen in Western charts by approximately 23–24 degrees, which often shifts placements into the previous sign.
How to Read Your Vedic Birth Chart
The three most important placements in any Vedic chart are:
- Lagna (Ascendant): The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. In Vedic astrology, the Lagna is the most significant single placement in the chart — it defines the first house and sets the entire house structure using the Whole Sign system.
- Moon sign (Chandra Rashi): The zodiac sign occupied by the Moon. In Vedic astrology, the Moon sign is often more emphasized than the Sun sign, particularly for personality, emotion, and mental tendencies.
- Nakshatra: The lunar mansion occupied by the Moon. There are 27 Nakshatras, each spanning 13°20′ of the zodiac, and each associated with a ruling planet, a deity, and specific qualities. Your Moon’s Nakshatra placement is used to calculate your Dasha (planetary period) sequence.
Vedic Chart vs. Western Astrology Chart
The most significant difference is the ayanamsa — the approximately 24-degree correction applied in Vedic astrology to shift from the tropical to the sidereal zodiac. This calculator uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard adopted by the Indian government’s Rashtriya Panchang and the most widely used ayanamsa in Jyotish practice worldwide.
This chart also uses the Whole Sign house system — each house equals exactly one full zodiac sign, beginning with the Lagna sign as the first house. This is the traditional Jyotish system and differs from the Placidus, Koch, or equal house systems used in Western astrology.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this Vedic birth chart calculator accurate?
This calculator uses the Jean Meeus astronomical algorithms and the Lahiri ayanamsa — the same standard used by professional Jyotish software. Planetary positions are accurate to within 1–2 degrees for most planets. Moon positions are accurate to within approximately 0.5 degrees. For time-sensitive calculations such as exact Dasha start dates or Muhurta timing, professional software with full Swiss Ephemeris precision is recommended.
What if I don’t know my exact birth time?
If your birth time is unknown, use 12:00 PM (noon) as a default. The planetary positions for slow-moving planets (Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) will still be accurate regardless of birth time. However, the Lagna (ascendant) changes approximately every two hours, so an unknown birth time means the first house placement and house assignments cannot be confirmed. The Moon moves about 13 degrees per day, so an unknown birth time may also affect the exact Moon sign if the Moon is near a sign boundary on your birth date.
What are Rahu and Ketu in a Vedic chart?
Rahu and Ketu are the Moon’s nodes — the points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic. They are always exactly 180 degrees apart and are always in retrograde motion. In Vedic astrology, Rahu and Ketu are treated as full shadow planets (Chaya Grahas) with significant influence. Rahu is associated with worldly desires, ambition, and karmic lessons around material life. Ketu represents spiritual detachment, past-life wisdom, and liberation. Together they form the karmic axis of the chart.
